Urethane SYSTEMS Product Information

Why Urethanes?

Polyurethanes are an extremely versatile family of materials which are utilized in multiple applications worldwide. The range includes thermoset polyurethane elastomers, coatings and dispersions, thermoplastics urethane elastomers and polyurethane foams. LANXESS Urethane Systems has the in-house technical ability to develop, manufacture and support all of these chemistries.

Our intellectual knowledge is ‘system building’ – we build systems. We chemically build prepolymers, we block isocyanates, we formulate systems and we match them with the best performing curatives, crosslinkers and polyols.

The term ‘prepolymer’ refers to a monomer or system of monomers that have been reacted to an intermediate molecular weight state. This material is capable of further polymerization by reactive groups to a fully cured, high molecular weight state.
Urethanes

ADIPRENE® or VIBRATHANE® prepolymers reacted with the corresponding VIBRACURE® curative yield polyurethane elastomers. Polyurethanes elastomers are particularly known for their:

• Abrasion and Tear resistance
• Chemical Resistance
• Resistance to Compression Set
• Wide range of Stable Harnesses from Shore A to Shore D scale

TRIXENE® blocked polyisocyanates, TRIXENE® and QUASILAN® prepolymers, and WITCOBOND® aqueous polyurethanes (PUDs) are formulated downstream to create polyurethane coatings or textile binders to protect, waterproof and weatherproof substrates and surfaces.

ISOFOAM® and FLEXOCEL® two-component systems are developed to produce urethane foams varying from flexible, semi-flexible to rigid. The isocyanate component is usually MDI-based and the polyol component is fully formulated containing polyols, blowing agents, catalyst and additives.

Blocked Isocyanate Crosslinkers

LANXESS’s range of TRIXENE® BI blocked isocyanates are used as crosslinkers designed for one-component factory applied heat-cured coatings. These products are available as both solvent-borne and water-borne.

Through patented technology, TRIXENE® BI blocked isocyanates will unblock at temperatures as low as 80ºC (with aromatic isocyanates), providing a balance of low-temperature curing and excellent physical properties for one-component systems. In fact, LANXESS offers products with various blocking agents to meet deblocking temperature requirements from 80º to 160ºC. A major blocking agent is 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (DMP), which is capable of deblocking at temperatures around 120oC

TRIXENE® BI blocked isocyanates offer the processor and end-user significant benefits over traditional crosslinkers:

• A range of flexibility, functionality and branching
• Compatibility and stability in the presence of hydroxyl-bearing resins including polyester, polyether, acrylates as well as epoxy and phenolic resins
• Monomeric isocyanate emissions are well below safety limits during crosslinking
• Exceptional color retention and pigment tolerance
• No significant VOC increases compared with standard coatings (DMP technology)
• No significant overbake yellowing (aliphatic systems and DMP blocking)
• No interference with acid catalysts in clear coats on overcoating melamine-containing basecoats

WITCOFLEX SUPERDRY® and ECODRY® coatings and films enable the textile industry to meet their requirements for fabrics that are soft, waterproof and breathable for durability and comfort of leisurewear, workwear and sportswear such as garments, tents, rucksacks, luggage, groundsheets and sleeping bags.

WITCOFLEX® hydrophilic polyurethanes are a range of moisture-vapor permeable polyurethanes available as solvent-based coating formulations that can be applied by either direct or transfer coating techniques. They can also be used to produce films which can be cast out on to a release carrier to form unsupported films and membranes. These can be further laminated to fabric(s) with water-based WITCOFLEX® adhesives.

Polyurethane Dispersions (PUDs)

LANXESS is a global supplier of polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) for the CAS (Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants) industry.

WITCOBOND® water-based polyurethane dispersions enable formulators to comply with increasingly demanding regulations on VOC (volatile organic content), effluents and other potentially harmful components. They can provide a full range of polymer properties in terms of toughness, hardness flexibility, weatherability and overall durability. They are used in industrial coatings, glass-fiber sizing (composites), leather and textile coatings and finishes and plastic coatings.

WITCOBOND® PUDs are available with solids content of 30-60% w/w and low viscosities. Anionic grades are mainly used in aqueous formulations with pH greater than 7 and can be used on their own or combined with other aqueous polymers such as acrylic dispersions and with pigments, matting agents, thickeners and other auxiliaries. They can be crosslinked with various agents to further improve chemical resistance and robustness. Dispersions with a range of solids content, adhesion levels, and physical properties provide choice for the end-user. Main applications include:
